Popularizing description of the results of scientific activity.
Project:
Looking at Tokyo - Creative Imaging using Drawing Streams
Research trip.
Principal investigator (PI): dr hab. Aleksander Woźniak
The scientific and artistic project entitled: Looking at Tokyo - creative imaging using drawing streams consisted in the realization of research at the Faculty of Graphic Arts, Tokyo University of Arts and artistic residency in Tokyo, Japan.
Performed artistic and scientific activities focused on improving knowledge about the following topics:
• Creative imaging and drawing from nature.
• Creative method of drawing streams.
• Exploring creative possibilities in artistic work using drawing streams and beams.
• Research on selected problems of the composition of an artwork.
The project resulted in preparation of a series of artistic works with a volume of around 1200 drawings and graphics. It comprises an autonomous work with an open structure, resulting from application of the drawing streams method. The premiere presentation of the cycle: Looking at Tokyo in Poland will take place on December 6, 2018 in the Gallery of the Central Bureau for Art Exhibitions in Olsztyn.
Complete documentation of the realized artistic material will be made available in the internet repository after the end of the exhibition.
The drawing streams method developed for the needs of this project was used in two ways - as an original creative method, serving artistic expression and improving artistic skills, as well as a research experiment to identify selected problems underlying the composition of an artwork. A wider theoretical reflection on drawing streams, sources of inspiration, as well as conclusions in the field of the subject matter is available in the form of an essay entitled: Negative space and transformation in the process of composition in art in an internet repository, at: https://zenodo.org/record/1453449
Significant element of the project were consultations and conversations with an artist, Japanese graphic designer - prof. Seiichiro Miida from the Department of Graphic Arts, Tokyo University of Arts in Japan, whose unique approach to the creative process formed significant inspiration in formulating research problems. The result of these activities is an interview conducted with Seiichiro Miida; the text is available on the internet platform at: https://zenodo.org/record/1415421.
The completed project is my contribution to the state of knowledge regarding the creative process: creative imaging with drawing streams. Implementation of the research task has significantly enriched my artistic and scientific experience. At the same time, it also had a positive impact on the formation and development of my pedagogical practice. Project documentation constitutes material for use in further research and creative work, and can also form a contribution to the discussion on compositional problems in a work of art.
